It is on the skulls that the differences between Neandertals and anatomically modern humans are most
easily observed. The famous supra-orbital ridge (brow ridge) of Neandertals is undoubtedly their most
remarkable feature.
In profile, the shape of the cranial vault is also very distinctive: the
lengthening of the skull from the back of the face reminds us of the shape of a rugby ball.
